On February 1, 2023, Med-Laser Surgery Center in Montebello toured Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles). It was an important discussion and a huge opportunity for the staff to share how they serve the community on a daily basis. Center Executive Director Mary Gamez shares, “We were proud to welcome Assemblymember Miguel Santiago to our Los Angeles-based DLP Eye Group. We used the time to share our origin story which grew from the love for serving the Medi-Cal community in his district.”

They were able to discuss innovations for surgery, including the utilization of robotics. Robin Menefee Regional Director of Operations for PAMF ASCs, summed up the visit with the following reflection. “Touring state officials through our ASCs helps them to better understand our process. On Tuesday, February 28, Fort Sutter Surgery Center toured Senator Angelique Ashby’s (D-Sacramento) District Director Daniel Washington and District Representatives Jay Singh and Andre Farida. They started with a tour explaining outpatient surgical care and the specialized procedures performed. Since Fort Sutter recently began a Robotic Program, they were able to highlight the innovation, which included a demo of the da Vinci Xi.
This was a clear example of how ASCs can offer high-quality care at a lower cost setting. It was a 90+ patient day so the members of the tour saw firsthand the ASC efficiencies and their ability to serve patients in a more efficient time frame. Administrator Christina McDonald states, “We were thrilled and honored by this unique opportunity to explain to our legislators the positive impact and the Quadruple Aim of Healthcare, which is enhancing patient experience, high-quality outcomes, affordable health care, and clinician well-being. Thank you, CASA for scheduling this visit!”
These tours are a tremendous opportunity for our elected officials to gain an understanding of how ASCs are driving down the cost of healthcare and providing excellent care to their communities. We encourage CASA members to participate in the program and thank those who have already opened their doors and hosted key members of the Legislature.
