Director of Nursing

SUMMARY
The Director of Nursing (DON) at Dougherty Laser Vision ASC is responsible for leading the delivery of nursing care across the facility’s clinical areas, including the Operating Room (OR), Pre-Operative (Pre-Op), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). This role ensures safe, high-quality, and efficient care while providing leadership, oversight of staff, and continuous improvement of clinical operations. The DON collaborates closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, and administrators to uphold the center’s high standards of surgical excellence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise all aspects of patient care in the OR, Pre-Op, and PACU to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care.
- Hire, train, and evaluate clinical staff; lead onboarding, mentorship, and ongoing professional development efforts.
- Develop and maintain clinical workflows, policies, and procedures that align with the center’s mission, regulatory standards, and operational goals.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, state and federal regulations, and other safety and quality mandates.
- Lead the center’s Quality Assurance Program, including quarterly meetings and monitoring key performance indicators.
- Partner with the administrative team to assess staffing needs, optimize scheduling, and allocate resources effectively.
- Facilitate open communication between surgeons, anesthesia providers, and clinical staff to maintain collaboration and efficiency.
- Monitor and evaluate patient satisfaction and feedback; implement improvements to enhance patient experience.
- Analyze clinical data and operational reports; prepare summaries and recommendations for leadership.
- Participate in strategic planning, contributing to short- and long-term goals related to clinical operations and quality outcomes.
- Oversee purchasing and inventory of surgical and pharmaceutical supplies as needed to support clinical functions.
- Maintain professional affiliations and remain informed of trends in surgical nursing and outpatient care delivery.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing care.
- Responsible for operational oversight and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
- This includes interviewing, hiring and training team members, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, and rewarding and disciplining team members.
- Addresses team member issues and concerns and facilitates conflict resolution.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the minimum knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
- Completion of accredited Registered Nursing Program from a college or technical school.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Five years of nurse management experience and/or training required; OR/ICU experience preferred.
- Experience with ophthalmology or ASC of preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Current, valid Texas State Registered Nursing (RN) License required.
- Current BCLS required or must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.

- Stationary position (sit and/or stand): Ability to stay in a stationary position, particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Move, traverse: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
- Operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect and/or position: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Constantly operates a computer and/or other productivity machinery.
- Ascend/descend, work atop, traverse: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, etc., and maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
- Position self to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl: Bending body downward, bending legs at the knees, moving about on hands and knees.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Activities requiring detailed or important spoken information to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make discriminations in sound.
- Computer use: Use a computer to collect and disseminate information, research issues, and process information.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Close vision: Clear vision at 20 inches or less.
- Distance vision: Clear vision at 20 feet or more.
- Color vision: Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Peripheral vision: Ability to observe an area seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
- Depth perception: Three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships.
- Ability to adjust focus: Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
MENTAL DEMANDS
- Comprehension: Ability to understand, remember, and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information.
- Organization: Ability to organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedules (both short-term and long-term) for oneself and others.
- Reasoning and Decision Making: Ability to apply common sense in performing the job, make decisions that have a moderate to significant impact on the work unit and the company's operations.
- Communication: Ability to understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, compose letters, outlines, memoranda, basic reports, and orally communicate technical information. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals utilizing a telephone and express ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Mathematics: Ability to count accurately, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and analyze numerical data for reporting purposes.
