Accepting Applications for CASA Award for ASC Excellence

The CASA Award for ASC Excellence acknowledges a CASA member facility that exemplifies best practices in the surgery center industry, plus actively promotes and advocates for ASC excellence and inclusion in the healthcare delivery system.

The criteria for the CASA Award for ASC Excellence is built around 5 pillar categories.

  • Membership – Facility supports the ASC industry through active engagement in professional organizations.
  • Advocacy – Facility drives ASC related legislation at both the Federal and State level through education, action and financial contributions.
  • Quality Metrics – Facility drives transparency and clinical quality in the ASC through facility benchmarking and public reporting and superior performance of important metrics including outcomes, pricing, and patient satisfaction.
  • Education – Facility ensures clinical best practices, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance through ongoing patient, staff and physician education.
  • Community Involvement – Facility is actively engaged in educating the public regarding the benefits of ASCs and demonstrating leadership in improving the general health of their community.

In addition to the CASA Award for ASC Excellence, the most outstanding center will be awarded the CASA ASC of the Year award.

As this is a CASA-sponsored award, all nominees must be members of CASA.  Nominees should submit an application to CASA and must demonstrate activity in each section (Membership, Advocacy, Quality, Community Involvement, Education, CASA Involvement).  Further information, guidance and an application can be found at the links below. The application period for 2023 awards is open March 1 - June 30, 2023. Applications should utilize information and activity from 2022.

CASA Announces ASC Excellence Award Winners for 2022

The California Ambulatory Surgery Association has created a program to evaluate and honor the ASC facilities that exemplify best practices in the surgery center industry, and whose leaders actively promote the value and importance of ASCs in the healthcare delivery system. CASA has selected eight California ASCs to receive the “ASC Excellence Award” for 2022.

The criteria for the CASA Award for ASC Excellence is built on five main components:

  • Membership: Active engagement in professional organizations.
  • Advocacy: Facility helps support or oppose ASC related legislation at the Federal and State level through education, action and political contributions.
  • Quality Metrics: Facility drives transparency and clinical quality in the ASC through facility benchmarking and public reporting, and demonstrates superior performance on key metrics including outcomes, pricing and patient satisfaction.
  • Education: Facility ensures clinical best practices, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance through ongoing patient, staff and physician education.
  • Community Involvement – Facility is actively engaged in educating the public regarding the benefits of ASCs and demonstrating leadership in improving the general health of their community.

Based on these criteria, CASA evaluated award applications from facilities throughout the state and selected the following 2022 winners of the “CASA ASC Excellence Award.”

Mission Surgery Center: Mission Surgery Center is multi-specialty surgery center founded in 1990.  They recently expanded their capabilities to include a total joint program and a Da Vinci Robot program.  They are committed to quality and are active in benchmarking with CASA and the Providence ambulatory care network.  Mission Surgery Center supports their community through participation in their Chamber of Commerce and local charities; they have also adopted a “Health for a Better World” vision – acknowledging health disparities among communities and making a commitment to staff and patient education to help champion and deliver improved health for all.

 

PAMF Surgery Center of San Jose: PAMF Surgery Center of San Jose (affiliated with Palo Alto Medical Foundation) was founded in 2013 and is dedicated to serving women and men with fertility and other reproductive health needs.  They treat a wide array of conditions by using the most advanced knowledge, technologies, and services available.  They have a robust commitment to quality, and have participated in outcomes studies and several quality and benchmarking initiatives.  Staff education is a priority and they have secured the Certified Ambulatory Infection Preventionist (CAIP) certification, the Certified Administrator Surgery Center (CASC) credential, as well as specialty-specific certifications. PAMF Surgery Center also has robust community involvement through support of the “Together We Rise” nonprofit which focuses on youth in foster care, March of Dimes which supports health moms and babies, and a program caring for uninsured and underinsured individuals.

San Leandro Surgery Center: San Leandro Surgery Center was founded in the Bay Area in 1995 where they serve a diverse population.  They are an award-winning center for safety and are committed to ongoing education and certification of their entire team. The Center is active in political advocacy through conducting grassroots outreach and hosting ASC facility tours for elected officials.

Sequoia Surgical Pavilion: Founded in 1999, Sequoia Surgical Pavilion has been excelling in orthopedic surgery and pain management. In 2021 they received the AAAHC Orthopaedic Advanced Certification in developing a total join program.  They are committed to education and have participated in a series of online videos on “How to Scale a Total Joint Program.” The Center’s physician leaders also help promote outpatient surgery through professional organizations, and support quality metrics through CASA, ASCA and the AAOS/AJRR.  Sequoia Surgical Pavilion helped support a County COVID Vaccination clinic.

Surgery Center Fremont: Surgery Center Fremont was established in 1995 and is a multi-specialty surgery center.  They are committed to a positive workplace culture and support education to advance staff skills and certification. They also have a highly effective pre-operative fast-track process that improves the experience for both patients and staff. Surgery Center Fremont supports their local community through a program to increase awareness about colon cancer, as well as promoting blood drives and programs to help the underserved.

Surgery Center San Carlos: Surgery Center San Carlos was established in 2014 and provides multi-specialty surgical services and gastroenterology procedures including an interventional endoscopy program.  Surgery Center San Carlos worked with Operation Access and Gift of Surgery to provide free surgical procedures for those in need, and one of their surgeons was recognized with the Unsung Hero award for his work in this program.  They are active in quality and benchmarking metrics, and promote education for their staff and community, including through development of classes to assist in physical and mental well-being.

Sutter Fairfield Surgery Center: Established in 2004, Sutter Fairfield Surgery Center is a multispecialty center serving Solano County.  They have helped increase understanding of the ASC model for policymakers by hosting a legislator tour. They are committed to education through CASC certification and ongoing work with AORN and APIC. The Center is a member of the Solano Growth Committee, which partners with community leaders to discuss strategic growth plans aimed at revitalizing the community and increasing access to care.

Sutter Roseville Endoscopy Center: The Sutter Roseville Endoscopy Center not only received the CASA Award for ASC Excellence but was also selected out of the eight winners to receive the prestigious distinction of “CASA ASC of the Year.” The Sutter Roseville Endoscopy Center was established in 2004 and performs 10,600 EGD and colonoscopies yearly.  They have received the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program award multiple times and were acknowledged by Newsweek as one of the top ASC in California in 2021.  They have supported political advocacy efforts, which include conducting facility tours for elected officials.  They have a robust quality management, infection control and safety program, incorporating education and certification from SGNA, AORN and APIC.  The Center held a community seminar on Colon Cancer Awareness attended by 400 people.
